What is the BIM methodology?
BIM, or Building Information Modeling, is a work methodology that facilitates the creation and modification of collaborative projects in a way that improves interaction among the various parties involved in the project: architects, engineers, construction companies, etc.
How are BIM projects created?
BIM projects are virtual models of a final product, created from smaller components called “BIM objects, ” which can be generic or manufacturer-specific.
BIM objects virtually replicate a real-world product, such as a door, and contain relevant information about it (dimensions, accessories, links to the manufacturer’s website or to the user and maintenance instructions, etc.)
Is it mandatory to have BIM objects?
There is no law requiring the use of BIM methodology, but some institutions require it because it improves the quality of the finished project.
The Ministry of Public Works, for example, requires the use of BIM methodology in public works projects and by agencies under its jurisdiction.
In Catalonia, this methodology is mandatory for public works projects exceeding 5.5 million euros.
Some private entities also require the use of BIM methodology.
