Fire doors must close automatically.
Fire doors only protect against fire when they are closed. The door must be closed to seal off the room and contain the fire for a certain period of time. When the fire door is open and a fire breaks out, the fire can easily spread to other compartments of the building, since there is no barrier to stop it.

Door closers can also be used in conjunction with electromagnets that hold the door open and only release the door leaf when the fire alarm is activated and the power is cut off, allowing the door closers to function.
