We have been discussing the CE marking for fire doors for a relatively short time. Although fire doors are still within the voluntary phase for CE marking, as of November 11, 2019, they must bear the CE marking in order to be sold in the European Single Market. But to explain what this entails, let’s first look at what the CE marking is.
What is the CE marking?
The CE marking is a quality assurance recognized throughout Europe, demonstrating that the product’s performance characteristics are as declared and that, furthermore, these characteristics comply with the applicable European standard. The performance characteristics must be defined in advance and will be set forth in a document called a “declaration of performance,” which will include a summary description of the product’s characteristics and will replace the fire tests and certificates that we have been exchanging with suppliers and customers up to now.
The advantage of CE marking is that a product bearing the mark can be sold in all member countries of the European Single Market without local authorities being able to require additional certificates or tests. In other words, the CE marking for fire doors standardizes the documentation required to market construction products in this case and provides relevant information to the buyer in a single document: the declaration of performance.
When will the CE marking become mandatory for fire doors?
The CE marking is mandatory for most construction materials and products sold in the European Single Market.
According to the classification in the Official Journal of the European Union, fire doors fall under the category of pedestrian, industrial, commercial, and garage doors, as well as operable windows. Product standard, performance characteristics. Fire resistance and/or smoke control characteristics. This is governed by standard EN 16034:2015, which requires fire-rated doors to be marked for sale as of November 1, 2019.
Although this means that, under current regulations, CE marking is not mandatory until the specified date, it may be required by third parties on a voluntary basis, as if it were a quality mark.
