Service life
The service life of a fire door refers to the length of time during which it fulfills the safety function for which it was designed.
That time frame is certainly relative, and depends largely on the sensitivity of the materials used, which deteriorate over time due to handling, use, and environmental conditions.
Regulations
It is important not to lose sight of current regulations. An RF door that complies with older standards—installed before the Technical Building Code came into effect—would not pass an inspection today, since the old standard did not require the current specifications. Fundamental aspects such as the durability of the self-closing mechanism or the manufacturing control of the tested samples were not taken into account. Nor were there any controls or standards regarding modifications to the tested characteristics, such as dimensions, hardware, and accessories approved for use with the door, etc. An RFtt-classified door from the old classification system does not correspond to a new EI2tt-C5 door and does not meet the performance requirements of the latter.
Therefore, in buildings where older doors need to be upgraded to demonstrate compliance with current Technical Code requirements, we recommend replacing those doors with new ones rated EI2tt-C5 rating, accompanied by a Declaration of Conformity issued within the last 10 years that includes a detailed description of the door, its components, and its performance characteristics.
