Access panels are used to cover openings for inspecting, maintaining, or repairing underground systems or those embedded in a wall, floor, etc. In other words, they are used to provide access to compartments containing water, electricity, gas, telecommunications, electrical panels, and other systems. If they are fire-rated, they also provide fire protection and isolate the compartment to prevent the fire from spreading.
Manholes are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes, with one or two panels, ranging from small sizes for telecommunications manholes to doors over 2 meters tall to allow the passage of people, tools, and machinery.
How are they different from regular doors?
Unlike standard swing doors, access doors are manufactured with a wraparound frame. They typically feature a triangular keyway opening system that allows access using a generic triangular key, although they can also be equipped with a lock and cylinder that use a standard key to prevent access by unauthorized personnel.
